A Charity Car Donation - The Benefits For You

From large or small checks, to cash, to old vehicles, to household items - there are many ways that people can make charity donations. The reasons behind these donations may vary. Some people donate solely for the tax benefit (if any). Others want to satisfy a need to help out others less fortunate than themselves. Still others (like me on many occasions) donate stuff to charity in order to get rid of 'crap' that is taking up valuable space.
But when is comes to vehicles, a car donation can help out others in a big way. And you stand to get some real while benefits that you may not have thought of...
1. You get more parking space:
That old clunker is taking up valuable parking space. Get rid of it and your life will be better. And if you are replacing the old car with a new one, great. Because...
2. The old car is an eyesore - you will be improving the neighborhood by getting rid of it:
Replacing the old car with a new one or eliminating it altogether is better than leaving the dingy-looking one parked at the curb in front of your house.
3. You can use your upcoming charity car donation to help you get your 'significant other's' permission to buy that new car you've been wanting:
Here's what you need to do to make this work: Tell her (or him) that you'd like to do something nice for a family in need, and that a charitable car donation is the best way you can do that. Let her know that you'll get a tax deduction. Don't tell her about your plans to look at a new car quite yet... wait until you've already donated your used car. Then introduce the idea to her slowly, and 99% of the time your spouse will gladly support you! (Sneaky? No, just good manners; goodness all around!)
4. You get a possible tax deduction:
Here's the way this works: A standard deduction of $500 off of your reported income is the only tax benefit you'll get if the car is really old or damaged (salvage yard material). But if the Kelley Blue Book value or N.A.D.A. (National Automobile Association) value of your vehicle is higher, you can claim more.
But remember that your charity car donation tax deduction is a reduced reported income, NOT the face value deduction from what you owe the IRS. Nevertheless, every little bit helps, right?
5. You get the good feeling of helping out a family that has truly fallen on bad times:
Not everyone that gets charity donations are lazy, welfare spongers; most are folks not much different from you or me. The difference is that they experienced extraordinary bad luck. Bad luck that - up 'til now - you and I have been fortunate enough to miss.
...Things such as fires, floods, victims of crimes, and the worst of all - losing their jobs due to no direct reason of their own. Matter of fact, many of us are carrying so much debt that we are only a couple paychecks away from similar circumstances. A drivable car is often all a family needs to get back on the right track - transportation to and from work, etc.
So go ahead and make a charity car donation to your local charity. But which one? Some are better than others and not all take vehicles.

Tax Tip - The Many Benefits of Donating

I thought I would take a few minutes to discuss the many benefits of donating, and how I firmly believe you should factor it into your life to some degree.
Let's jump right in. I think that there are three main benefits to donating, and they go in no particular order.
First, it is a tax deduction. As long as you keep track of your receipts, donate to "qualified organizations" and honestly valuate your items, you are most certainly entitled to write off these items on your taxes. There are some limitations, but I usually donate between $500 and $1000 worth of money, items and so forth on an annual basis. That makes for some decent tax savings.
Second, it is the right thing to do. If you are fortunate enough to even be in the position to where you have unwanted items around your house, to me donating is the right, Christian thing to do. I came from a very middle class upbringing. We were by no means poor, but we certainly didn't have unwanted items piling up all over the place. If you can do so, try to remember all the people out there who are less fortunate than you are.
Third, The De-Cluttering Effect. Setting up some sort of donation system in your household can prevent your house from ever filling up with too much crap. A "de-cluttered" house is a beautiful thing!
Let me tell you the process that I go through before deciding to donate something. First, I determine whether or not I can sell it. Then, I try to find out if a family member or a friend is interested in the item. And finally, if it still works or is still useable, it gets donated (trust me; this thought process takes all of about 10-20 seconds with most things).
A far as any tips and/or pointers on the donating part itself, here is what I have found to be helpful.
Donating only to a qualified organization. Basically, this means to a church or the Salvation Army or a similar organization. Giving two garbage bags full of clothes to your cousin Jimmy really doesn't count.
Valuate your items fairly. Be careful here! I read somewhere that overvaluing donated items is a huge red flag to the IRS. Most of your stuff will not be worth much, and if you use a "thrift shop" mentality, you should be fine. When in doubt, go low.
And finally, save your receipts. My donations to my church I always make with checks, so I have a paper trail, because the churches I have always been associated with were notoriously BAD when it came to keeping track of this. Also, whenever I drop stuff off at the Goodwill, they always ask if I want a receipt. I always say "yes" and immediately describe, date and value the items. The receipt then gets tucked away in my "tax" file for the end of the year.
Donating is good for your soul, good for your house, and good for your wallet. Why wouldn't you want to start doing it?

Donate A Car To Support Veterans

Indeed, a lot of people have already forgotten all about those brave soldiers who have fought for the country many years ago. These badly wounded warriors who have given everything for their fellow countrymen are now old and tired, most of them leading a miserable life with their families. This is why some institutions and organizations have decided to focus their programs on helping out these veterans.
One of these programs is a car donation service that will fund the causes for these veterans, in order to provide them and their families with financial aid, educational scholarships, legal representation in their claims, and many more. They surely deserve to be treated well, to be given due honor and respect, and to be assisted in all their needs.
If you donate a car to support veterans, this will benefit plenty of these veteran warriors in many places. Besides, aside from being able to help them and to give this contribution to your community and country, there are also other wonderful advantages to this donation. Here are some of the gains you can derive from such donation:
• Tax Deduction- Usually, when you donate a car to support veterans, you will receive a tax deduction. The amount often depends on the current value of your car.
• Additional Incentives- There are some groups and companies that offer bonuses or added incentives aside from tax deduction upon your car donation. These may include but are not limited to gift cards, free travel and accommodation packages, and discounted and free appliances.
• Extra Space- You can enjoy extra space in your garage now that your old car is gone. Instead of letting it rot and collect dust there, it is better to donate it and allow this piece of junk to become a treasure by being used to help others.
• Personal Fulfillment- When you give without expecting anything in return, it is a kind of personal fulfillment. Hence, it is not really the tax deduction and incentives that you should think about when you donate a car to support veterans. Instead, think hard about the needs of these veterans and how this simple good deed of yours will benefit them greatly.
With all of these wonderful benefits, there is no doubt that car donation is much better than selling it especially if it is already in very bad condition. When you donate a car to support veterans, you are extending goodwill towards these people who deserve a big and loud round of applause for all that they have done.

Junk My Car Service - Your Simplest Solution to Get Rid of Junk Cars

If you have a car that has steadily degenerated into being a total piece of junk, you have a few options. You can pretty much forget about any kind of trade-in value towards a new car but you can consult a service to help you haul the old clunker away - and earn some cash in the process! Have you heard of Junk My Car? It's a service that offers free towing to help you easy your mind and finally get rid of your old automobile.
Forget leaving your vehicle in a car graveyard or trying to sell all of the usable parts yourself. You can leave all of the work up to the professionals. Junk My Car actually salvages your auto parts and then passes some of the proceeds on to you in the form of a cash payment. You can get rid of a junk car through a fairly easy series of steps. First, you either call them or go to their web site, so that you can submit your car. Then, you arrange the time and place for them to send out a tow truck, so that they can actually get possession of your car. And from that point onward, it is pretty much a done deal. You are finally free of your junk car and of any dealings associated with it. Junk My Car will start the auto salvaging process themselves and you can wash your hands free of that old eyesore on your lawn.
Just think of what your car can accomplish once you are rid of it. It can become the source of endless spare parts, for people who still have functional versions of the same car. It can be used by a crane operator who really liked those Newton's cradles people used to have (where they metal balls hit each other, sending energy back and forth), as a way of relieving both boredom and stress. And it can also be used by that amazingly enterprising car buff, who will tow it home and turn it into the car of his or her dreams.
So when you get rid of your junk car, you might very well be helping out a whole lot of people. The car that you do not even want any more might one day become the car someone else rides in style inside. And you will be providing jobs for people at every step of the way - from the tow truck driver, to the crane operator, all the way to the junk yard's support staff. And to think, all of those people can be helped if you just let go of that old clunker.

Car Donations - Helping Natural Disaster Relief

Donating a used car to the non-profits that specialize in disaster relief efforts is an excellent choice when trying to decide what you should do with your old vehicle. Depending on what charity you choose - they could work across the globe, nationally or even in your local neighborhood. Charities are dependent on donations to support their efforts as they are completely run through generous contributions from the public. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, charities flooded the scene, providing shelter and food to thousands of people who were left homeless. From responding to earthquakes to mudslides to tornadoes, there is a charity that specializes in any type of disaster relief you can think of.
Charity vehicle donation programs supply a significant amount of funding for non-profits that specialize in disaster relief efforts. How do the vehicles provide that significant amount of funding? Well, when you donate your car, the charity sells it and uses the cash proceeds to continue their work. It is easy to donate a used car to charity - certainly easier than selling it yourself. Older used cars usually don't have much trade in value, but if you donate your car, you are eligible for a tax deduction equal to the cash value your car sells for at auction.
With the problems in the economy, cash donations are down, but the need for services more prevalent than ever.
Natural disasters can occur at anytime, anywhere and auto donations help to insure that charities will be available when they are called upon to help those in need. Their efforts relieve suffering that for most is unimaginable - One way show your gratitude for your good fortune is to make a gift of your old car to charity.

Vehicle Donation - Charities Accept Almost Any Kind Of Vehicle

Vehicle donation has become extremely popular in recent years and for good reason. When you donate your car to a charitable organization you will be helping those less fortunate.
It's important to note that if you want to donate your vehicle to charity you won't be limited by the type of vehicle you have. Most auto donation programs accept many different types of vehicles from SUV's to farm equipment to snowmobiles and boats. The range of vehicles accepted by vehicle donation programs is endless. For example, cars, trucks, and even private airplanes are accepted by most charities.
The best thing that you can do is contact your local program and get more information about what type of vehicles are accepted. The good news is that there are a ton of great options and most of these charitable programs are very supportive and will guide you through the entire process.
One thing to keep in mind is that it's not only vehicles that are not running that make good candidates for vehicle donation. Vehicles in good running condition make great donations as many of these charities accept functional vehicles that can be donated to people who are in desperate need of them. This is an option that you should definitely consider if you have running vehicles that you no longer have a use for. Normally, there are three options for the charity when someone donates a running, good condition vehicle - the vehicle is either sent to auction to fetch a good price for the charity, the vehicle is given to one of the charity's program participants for him to use or the charity decided to use the vehicle for logistical purposes, such as driving volunteers to and from.
If you are thinking about an auto donation, you should contact your favorite charity in order to learn more about the process. This will allow you to get the info you need to get the process started and get your car in the hands of someone who is in desperate need of it.

Vehicle Donations Help Natural Disaster Victims

Many times people decide to donate to charity because they want to help someone less fortunate than themselves. Few people ever donate to charity with the thought that they may someday need help themselves. If you want to donate to a worthy cause, consider a car donation to the Red Cross because they help thousands of people each year.
Though you may be thinking that 'it' could never happen to you, natural disasters are never expected and if you ever fall victim to one, the Red Cross will be there for you too. Vehicle donation is a great way to help someone in need right now and feel a sense of security knowing that your auto donation will be there for your own family if ever needed. Even if you are feeling the pinch of tough economic times, your car donation can make a difference for charities.
While many charities and organizations do important work, the Red Cross' services are life saving and unparalleled. Their primary goal is to make life safer for people and they do that through their force of volunteers who teach preparedness and prevention. But when disaster strikes, they can be counted to be on the scene bringing relief, aid and support to victims suffering. Vehicle donation is a lifeline for them as the donated auto they accept provides funding that keeps them strong.
Since they are not a government agency, they rely on people who can donate a car to help them provide basic essentials and the shelter that people have come to associate the Red Cross with. Your auto donation can mean the difference between being out in the cold or in the safety of a shelter with a bed and food for people who have lost their home to flood or fire. Just as you plan for the safety and security of your family in case of the 'unthinkable', your car donation to the Red Cross can be another step in your plan that will also help someone in need right now.

Car Donation - A Step Ahead to Help

Smiles are very hard to come by and the willingness to accept the position in which we live is questioned. Such is the case for millions of needy children across the country. For needy children, it is very difficult for them to obtain what they need to survive daily. A simple roof over their heads or basic necessities is one thing, but they can only survive so long with those things at their disposal. There comes a point when there are more needs that must be met. Some of those needs are met with a simple donation.
Car donation charities fix donated cars to help deliver food or other supplies to children in need. A tax deduction is issued for all donated cars or property so both parties benefit from this gracious act. Whether it is a donation in New York, or a donation in Connecticut, the cause is the same.
A simple car donation goes beyond just delivering food to the needy. Donated car funds are used to support hospitals that treat children for diseases, burns or other ailments. They also provide rides for students to go to after school activities. There are many uses for a car donation and the possibilities are certainly endless. Places like the Ronald McDonald House, the Boy Scouts of America and the Rockland Institute for Special Education have benefited from car donations.
The end all is to see a smile put back on the face of a child who is deserving of it.

Happiness Brought Through Car Donation

Have you ever read of the Chinese expression which means double happiness? In the Western Hemisphere there is a way of getting that state of delight and satisfaction. And this is through car donations. It may strike you as hilarious, maybe even absurd, but I want to teach you how donating an automobile can make you and those around you really happy.
Now how do car donations make a person tremendously happy, you may wonder? To start, think about the car that you've stored in the garage for the longest time and ask yourself these questions: Is the car still worth storing? Is it still maximizing the use of gas, or has it grown into a gas guzzler? Has your growing family getting to big for the car? Is it thought to be still in style? Do you have the need for the car, or can another person put it to far better use?
When you're a businessman, or a salesman, you have to make an impression of achievement which starts with the automobile you are in. Driving around in an ancient beat up car may suggest that both your business and you aren't doing all that well.
Instead of donating a car, you could possibly decide to just sell it yourself. This can be a fine idea. When in comparison with car donations, marketing and advertising your car requires much more work. Why go through all of that when you're able to easily donate it?
Imagine yourself entertaining men and women you don't know who are making queries on the car which you have put on the market. A lot of them will have to test-drive it personally and you happen to be the person who has to go with them. You could even let thousands test drive your cars without offers.
One other thing to consider when selling your car is you have to make all the necessary repairs to make your car be sellable. When including to this the chore of advertising the car, going online, posting it in the daily news, it is possible to become quite stressed.
If you finally find somebody to purchase your car, you will then need to go through and fill out every one of the documents and contracts necessary. Plus, you may earn the ire of the customer if the car fails to function as you said it would. There are stories of vehicles working well and then suddenly conking out when sold and driven by the new owner.
Car donations to charity remove all these frustrating tasks. Despite the lack of anxiety, when you donate your car to a charity, you are helping someone in need, someone much less lucky then you are. It won't take a lot for you to donate your car, but it will make a major difference in someone's life. You are happy because you've just gotten rid of your vehicle, and because you helped somebody in need, and they're happy because they now have ways to get to work.

Why Car Donations Are a Better Option to Selling Used Cars

With all of its benefits, it is surprising how few people know about car donations. When they finally decide it's time to say goodbye to their old car, the first thing that pops up is either sell it second-hand or have it towed to the local junkyard. While both can yield a small profit, automobile donations offer more. Here are just some of the benefits:
Free and Hassle-Free Disposal of a Used Car
Before a used car can even be considered worthy of selling, the owner must dish out some money for repairs and restoration services. More often than not, when the vehicle is finally sold, the previous owner will only have reached a break-even between repair expenses and final selling price. With car donations, there is no need to spend for repairs as vehicles of almost any condition can be accepted. Donors also don't have to spend a lot of time looking for a willing buyer.
Taxes can be Deducted
If the value of the vehicle is marked over $500, the donor can deduct the amount for which the car was sold. The donor's chosen charity is obliged to send a Form 1098 B & C within 30 days of the car's liquidation.
Personal Satisfaction
This is probably the best benefit one can get for giving vehicle donations. Knowing that one has been able to contribute to the betterment of society is more than enough reward for simply disposing of an old and well-worn vehicle. Car donations are among the simplest ways to make the world a better place. They can be used as an act of advocacy for a certain cause or charitable effort.

Donating a Car - Essential Free Guide For Donations of Cars, Trucks and Autos

When donating a car, there are a few things you should know. You can donate all kinds of vehicles but each has its own regulations. Remember that you'll need to pay attention to the current laws. For instance, in the US, laws were changed in 2004 that limit the used car donation tax deduction of the donor to the amount the car is eventually sold for. These laws for donations of a car will vary by country, so make sure you pay attention.
It's important to make sure the charity is eligible to receive tax deductible contributions before donating a car. If you're in the US, ask the organization for their Letter of Determination from the IRS. In any country, make sure the charity gives you a good, clear receipt that's well documented in exchange for your donation. Remember that tax agencies look closely at donations not made in the form of cash, so clearly document the value of the vehicle, and keep good records.
Complete the appropriate tax forms if your vehicle is worth more than the minimum amount. Include a written acknowledgment from the charity, and make sure you know which form to fill out. If the organization sells the car, they have thirty days to provide you with a certification in most locations.
This certification says that the parties that sold and bought the vehicle were not related to one another. If the car is not sold, a receipt must still be provided within the appropriate time limit, and the donor must be told what the car is to be used for, and state that it is not intended for sale.
Donations of a car that has a high value must have an independent appraisal, and possibly may need additional forms. Determine market values using a Blue Book or other guide, and do so carefully. Never simply pick the highest value for year and model. Instead, pay attention to condition, mileage and other factors.
Take detailed photos of the vehicle's interior and exterior, and make sure you have receipts for repairs and upgrades you've made to help document value. Remember that you are responsible for determining the correct value for the vehicle, not the charity. Most of the time, vehicles donated to charity are sold, and you may receive only a small deduction.
Donating a car can be very useful, but it's important to remember that it isn't the best choice for everyone. Pay attention to your circumstances and your area's regulations to decide if your car should be donated.

Why New Car Prices Are So High

New car sales really struggled during the recession. Many people could not afford to buy a new car and others simply could not qualify for the loan. Now that the economy is beginning to recover, you would think that car makers would keep their prices stable as an incentive to increase sales. That is not what is happening. The average cost a new car is up almost 7% over last year and has hit an all time high of $30,748. There are many reasons for the soaring price of new cars.
In previous years, car makers produced a lot of cars. At the end of the model year, they often ended up with excess inventory at the dealerships. In order to move that inventory, they would reduce the price of the vehicles by offering the buyer cash back or other incentives. Car makers are no longer offering those incentives. They do not have excess inventory because they are now producing many fewer cars.
The current rise in gas prices has dramatically increased the demand for small cars, subcompacts, hybrids, small SUVs and light trucks. Although people are looking for fuel efficiency, they are not willing to give up the features they had in their larger vehicles such as in vehicle entertainment systems. These extras add greatly to the cost of the vehicle.
During the recession, it was difficult to qualify for a car loan. That is no longer the case as much more credit in the form of low interest rate loans is available. The interest rate on a new car loan is much less than that of a used car loan. That coupled with the high price of used cars is causing many buyers to gravitate towards purchasing a new car instead of a used one. Most buyers are expecting to keep the vehicle for five years. That is much longer than in the past. Due to this, they are willing to splurge on pricey extras and options for their new car. The demand for fuel efficiency with luxury will keep the cost of a new car high for the foreseeable future.
Along with the decision to purchase a new car there is the decision of what to do with the older car. Although used car prices are high, they are only high for late model, low mileage, fuel efficient vehicles. There is not much of a demand either from car dealers or individuals for all other vehicles.
That basically leaves only two options for dealing with the older car. Those options are to donate your car to charity or junk the car. The average amount received by junking a car is about $200. Car donation results in a tax deduction that is at least $500. In many cases, it is much higher. A person will get more of a benefit when they donate a car instead of junking it. The charity will use the proceeds from the vehicle donation to help those in need. That helps our economy. Car donation is an excellent way of paying it forward.

Reasons For Car Donations

Transportation is very crucial in these days for all of us and so is the case with the organizations doing social services. Car donation programs are very common these days as through these they can lift up others life. Generally, the car donations became a hit with everyone because with it came along great tax benefits. There are several reasons behind these charities accepting all sorts of vehicles for car donations like boats, cars, trucks, SUV's and so on. Some of the common reasons to do so are as follows:
o Firstly, they accept car donations for helping the needy people. The individuals who are poor. Sometimes these agencies also try to provide them with employment through the money got out of car donations.
o Secondly, they might utilize the donation of cars for helping the single parent. Since single parents generally go through a lot of struggles to make a living. These kinds of organizations help them in easy living and also easy rearing of the children.
o Thirdly they might use the vehicles for smooth running of their organizations; they can save their unnecessary expenses on buying a new one.
o Sometimes they might just auction the vehicles as they might not need it. They utilize this money for some or the other charity purpose only
Thus, no matter with what reasons they accept your donation, they always utilize it for doing good in the society and specially in the life of needy people. Outreach center is an IRS recognized organization and it has spread its car donation programs all over the U.S.

Car Donation - How To Turn Your Old Worn-Out Car Into A Nice Car Donation Tax Deduction!

If you're thinking about a charity car donation I'm going to outline some of the facts you should know. You can receive a nice IRS tax deduction for your old car or used car and help someone in need in the process.
It's called car donation or charity car donation when you give a charity organization your vehicle - automobile, car, truck, ATV, RV, airplane or any other vehicle which might or might not be in useable condition. In the U.S. charitable vehicle donations provide a great tax benefit for the donor and it's rapidly gaining in popularity.
First you want to learn the mission of any charity you're considering. If you have a specific charity in mind for the car donation do some research on it, especially if you're not sure how reputable the charity is. There are many national and local charitable organizations that advertise in newspapers or on television and openly announce they are looking for car donations. You have probably seen some of these, but are they your best choice?
Sometimes charities will use the car donations themselves in their daily charitable activities - sometimes to transport people. Perhaps they may use it to transport people in need to doctor's appointments, social worker appointments, hospital tests, etc. More often though the vehicles will be sold at auction or off their car lots to raise money for the charity's programs or their general fund. Yes it is not common knowledge that many charities have their own car lots. Many Goodwill Industry stores have their own.
Many people do choose to donate their used and unwanted cars in order to help others. If you buy a new car or own a car that isn't running, you can consider donating the car, truck, or other vehicle. You can also donate boats, RVs, ATVs, airplanes and other vehicles or even real estate depending on what your charity accepts. Your donation is tax deductible which helps you and the organization that you donated the vehicle to.
Day in and out, charities provide services and needed support to people in communities all over the nation. While some may receive government grants or private donations, this is never enough to take care of the many causes they pursue. Charity car donations are a planned part of the non-profit organization's budget. These vehicle donations can make the difference in the kind of services they can offer. So if you donate vehicles you will help these organizations continue to function
In a nutshell, car donation means acquiring old cars from donors and donating them to charity organizations. There are car donation companies that are intermediaries or links between the donors and the people who benefited from these donations. They are a big help in funding for charities. Some companies even help organizations that do not have their own charity programs. The car donation companies can auction the donated car or other vehicle in the marketplace and the money is given to the charities or the car can be used by the charity organization or be sold on their used car lot.
When you give your car to charity you are given a charitable gift IRS Tax Receipt. The vehicle donations when made to a reputable and bona fide charitable organization are tax-deductible. The IRS allows the donor-taxpayer to claim a tax deduction on the estimated value of the vehicle up to $500. The donor of the car or vehicle must have title, so make sure you have it handy when you start the process.
Make sure to ask if the charity handles the car donations - have their own charity car donation program or pays an outside company to do it. If the for-profit company handles the car or vehicle donations, find out just how much money the charity receives from the sale and how much will go to the for-profit company.
You will see car donation program in just about every major city in every state in the U.S., including California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and Michigan. There are no laws preventing charities from accepting these types of donations.
Some of the car donation charities you might see are: Target, Purple Heart, Kidney Foundation, Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries and various cancer organizations.
In any case you will greatly benefit for your charity car donation both in claiming a nice car donation tax deduction or benefit and in helping charities continue to operate so they can help people in need.

Watch Out For the Car Donation Swindle

There is a swindle in the air, when there is a deal being made on the side. Even if your intentions are good, you need to look out for scams which might land you in a lot of trouble. One such scam which has been going around has been the car donation one. Even after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has toughened its regulations concerning people donating their old vehicles to charity, you have to be careful.
The most common of these scams are when people donating vehicles apply for a tax deduction which is more than the sale value of the car. There are also persons and companies masquerading as charitable organizations to make a quick buck out of these donations. The IRS regulations have made it more difficult for these crooks to work the system. But donors have to go the extra mile to ensure that their car donation is to a legitimate charity. Remember, the onus on proving that your car donation is above board is on you, as the donor.
There are free guides in certain websites where you can check on charitable organizations and the car donations they run. You will have to find out if this charity is really a not-for-profit organization, i.e. the resources that the charity generates from donations are used only for those in need. This is important, as only a donation to an organization which is legitimate will get you the tax deduction.
You need to do your research thoroughly before you donate your vehicle. You have to do background checks on the organization. Ask the persons concerned how they plan to use the vehicle. Will it be used by the charity in its programs or will it be sold. In case of the latter option, you will have to ask how much the charity will get out the sale proceeds, especially if the sale is handled by an intermediary.
However, if you feel that your donation should be used in a specific way, you have to make this clear. If you want the car donation to go towards transportation of people in need and if the organization is not conducive to this suggestion, look for another one. Again, if the vehicle is sold; ask what the sale proceeds will be used for.
You can claim tax deductions only on the price amount the charity has resold it for, if it the donated car has a market value of over $500. If the value of the car is $500 or lower, your claim for tax deduction should be based on the general condition of the car, the amount of mileage it has done and a reasonable market price that it could fetch. Check out the pricing guide for used cars and you can get a fair idea.
Your duty does not end with the car donation. You will also be required to keep the records of the transfer to the charitable organization. After the car is re-titled, you will have to report the change in ownership to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). This is essential or else you will end up paying someone else's parking fines.

What Is Goodwill Car Donation Money Used For?

Curious about what Goodwill car donation money is used for?  When a person donates a vehicle to charity, the charity will usually turn around and sell the vehicle at auction.  Once sold, the charity takes the proceeds from the sale.  But what happens then?  Where does the money go?  How and who does it help?  These are all important questions to ask before deciding upon a charity to receive your vehicle donation.
Once the charity has received a vehicle, the process of turning that vehicle into cash is a relatively simple and straightforward one.  Upon arrival, the vehicle is given a good look-over by the mechanic and then is cleaned thoroughly.  A date is then set for the car to be auctioned off.  Most charities that participate in these vehicle auctions hold their auctions either every week or every two weeks.  Therefore, if you were to donate a vehicle at the beginning of the week, it is very likely that it could be sold at auction that following weekend.   Finally, when the vehicle is sold at auction, the proceeds are given to the selected charity.
The objective for this money, and all fundraising efforts of non-profits, is to continue the mission of the charity.  In Goodwill's case, it would be to enhance the quality of life of individuals, families and communities by eliminating barriers to opportunity through different services like employment and training programs.
I know what you're thinking.  "All that sounds nice, but where do the dollars from the sale of my car actually go?"  Well, to all sorts of destinations in reality.  The fundraising money can go to pay for the logistics of the charity's different programs, such as transporting volunteers to a site or purchasing materials for the beneficiaries of an employment training program.  Sometimes the money is used to pay for staffing and administration costs, such as the office's rent and utilities or computers for employees.  And still other times the money is used to pay third-party companies that the charity outsources to do different jobs, such as web design, marketing, fundraising or event planning.
If you're interested in looking at real figures on how charities are spending the money that comes in through fundraising efforts, there are a number of charity watchdog agencies out there committed to providing that information to the public.  In addition, the Better Business Bureau has great resources on charity accountability standards.  For example, one of the BBB's standards states charities should try to shoot for 35% or less of all money coming in that is to be used for administrative costs.  Therefore, if you're doing research on a charity and you see that the percentage of the money going to administrative costs is 75, you know to donate your vehicle elsewhere.

Car Donation For Veterans - Donate Your Vehicle, Help a Vet Or Two

When a person goes off to fight a war, they tend to come back changed in a host of different senses of the word. Most people who fight in a war come back reasonably unscathed, but wiser in a lot of ways. While many come back with a sort of emotional scar tissue that makes them tougher than they were before, a great many also come back bearing some kind of serious emotional or physical wounding. And in a lot of cases, these wounds hinder the veteran's ability to live a normal live in the civilian world. And car donation for veterans serves to help these unfortunate heroes and heroines.
You might think that car donation for veterans is just so that you can help the more low income veterans to get jobs, by providing them with the transportation that they might not otherwise be able to afford on their own. And while that is certainly the case, you are doing more than just that. A lot of times, car donation for veterans also serves the function of providing the money that is needed for programs that help the vets who can not help themselves.
While some veterans have only been mildly harmed by their war time experience, a great many are so horrifically damaged that they can not function properly in society. They can not hold down jobs, they may not be able to perform the necessary tasks of maintaining normal social relationships. And in some extreme cases, these unfortunate victims of duty may not even be able to move properly. In those cases, it is not enough to simply help them to get jobs. They may need to learn entirely new skills, or even be cared for on the level that only a nursing home can properly provide.
And if only the government always did as it promised. While it is technically true that every person who served at least one day of active duty during a time of war (even in the States) is technically entitled to the benefits which are guaranteed all injured military personnel, the vets do not always receive these benefits. Car donation often provides veterans with the basic services they need, while they wait for Uncle Sam to get off his duff and do something. When you donate your car to a charity that helps veterans, the money they auction it for provides real help, to real people who really need it. Don't we owe it to the people who keep us safe to give back to them as they have given to us through active duty?

Donating Your Car to Deduct Your Taxes

Now that you have decided to donate your vehicle and you might like to browse through these small tips to help you in your task.
1. Seek a worthy charity - You can't donate your car to charity if you do not choose what charity you are giving your car away. In choosing a charity try to find if they're accepting cars as a donation and choose only the most reputable charity especially one that could really use a car. It would also help if the said charity is eligible for tax deductions.
2. Steer clear of middlemen - This intermediataries advertise their services that can help you give your vehicle away, unfortunately there's a catch: organizations like this take about 50 percent of the vehicles 90 percent value and the charities often receive a bad deal because of it. Do the transactions you're self personally.
3. Handle things personally - Try delivering the car yourself to the charity that you're going to donate your car. This also will save you and your charity to money that the both of you would have used for paying a vehicle delivery service. It is also a great way to show the donation recipients that said car is actually working.
4. Transfer ownership of the car - Do insist on the charity that you're going to donate your vehicle that the vehicle must be re-titled to them. This will prevent you from receiving any violations that your car might be involved in so do insist that they sign the donation paper's ownership space to make it formal. In the event that they refuse to sign in the ownership space just take your car and find another charity to donate to.
5. Calculate your car's value - Whenever you're making any non-cash donations you can be certain that an IRS audit is heading your way. Make a document that states the car's fair market value (FMV) and keep records of it. Charities mostly sell a donated car and if said car has a value of $500 the IRS will want some documentary evidence to see how much of the was the car sold so ask the charity for receipts on how much was the car sold.
6. Finish the necessary paperwork - This is for your yearly tax returns. As stated above some monetary value needs some documentation, if the vehicle's value was $500 above you are required to fill in the IRS Form 8283's Section A and if it was more than $50,000 include an outside appraisal must be included as well. A proof of donation from the charity will be needed as well.

5 Tips on Donating a Car to Charity

So, you've decided to donate your car to charity. That is a good thing to do as the charity can either use your vehicle for their own purposes or sell it and take the proceeds from the sale to fund its operation. Donating a car can be good for you too as you stand to enjoy a tax deduction if you itemize your federal tax return.
Donating a car isn't a slam dunk, however. Your desire to "do good" can have little to no impact on a charity or your tax position if you handle these steps incorrectly. Fortunately, there is a right way to donate a car and those tips we'll cover here.
1. Locate an eligible charity. Not all charities can handle car donations and for those that do they should be an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) organization. Visit IRS.gov and search for "Exempt Organizations Select Check" to find out if a charity is listed. If it is not, then you won't be able to claim a tax deduction. You can still make a donation without the tax benefit, however.
2. Donate directly. You can do the most good by donating your car directly to a charity, avoiding a middleman. When working through a middleman, he'll take a significant chunk of the proceeds from the sale and pass the rest on to the charity. By working directly with charities that accept donations, you can maximize the benefit they receive from your donation.
3. Deliver it yourself. If possible, plan to deliver your vehicle directly to the charity. That way the cost of a towing service will not diminish what the charity receives for the vehicle upon its sale to another party.
4. Complete the transfer of the title. Ensure that your vehicle's title is transferred properly. Fill out all DMV forms and retitle the car to the charity. Notify the DMV of its transfer to avoid possible problems later on including parking tickets. Contact your auto insurer to cancel coverage once the transfer has been completed.
5. Your tax deduction. If the charity keeps the car for internal use, then find out its fair market value by using trusted sources such as Kelley Blue Book to determine what that amount is. If the vehicle is sold, then you'll need to get a receipt from the charity with the amount the charity made. You'll file IRS form 8283 with your tax return, but if your car was worth more than $5,000 you'll need to get an independent appraisal and attach that document with your tax return.
Considerations
If a charity doesn't accept donated vehicles and you still want to help out, consider selling the car yourself and taking the proceeds from that sale and donating it to the charity. Yes, this can be a bit of a hassle, but you'll likely get a better price for the car and be able to take a larger tax deduction.

Car Donation Tax Deduction - 3 Best Tips to Help You Donate Your Car

If you're thinking about donating your car or truck to a local or national charity, here are a few tips that you should know. There are a few problems you can avoid if you do a little research first. Ultimately your goal may be to gain a good car donation tax deduction. The change in the tax laws make it easier now to get a good deduction.
1. How the car donation charity uses your donated car. Decide whether it's important to you or not if you know how the charity is going to use your car. If so, you may want to give them a call. They may sell it on a used car lot they maintain or farm it out to a charity car donation program or sell it on their own car lot. They may use the car to transport people or goods for their charitable work. Or they may give the car to a needy individual.
2. How much money will the charity actually get from you car donation. If the charity plans to sell the car it will probably not get the 'blue book' value of the car. There also will be expenses directly related to the sale - newspaper classified ads or their car lot costs, both which will reduce the negotiated selling price
If they farm it out to a car donation charity program, they've contracted with, to sell then they will get a lot less for it. And of course if they use it themselves or give it away then their won't be a monetary gain.
3. Before you donate your car to any charity you want to make sure it's a legitimate charity. If it's a large national organization then there will be less of a problem. If it's a local charity then you may have to do some checking. You want to make sure they're eligible to receive contributions that are tax deductible, so you'll receive the car donation tax deduction. So ask them if they have the "letter of determination" from the IRS.
Many charities accept cars, truck, and other vehicles and are not tied into providing you with a tax deduction. Make sure to find this out in advance.
These are just a few of the tips you'll need to know if you plan to donate your car to a charity. Make sure to do a little research first to make sure you understand just how much you may get for your car donation tax deduction if they sell it, give it away or keep it.

Animal Rescue Car Donation - How to Help Save Homeless Pets

There are many people who recognize the problem of negligent pet owners and want to help save more animals. Although some people take in as many stray dogs and cats as they can, they are also aware that a bigger effort is needed to save more lives. Animal shelters, rescue organizations, and the Humane Society, do a lot toward protecting pets and finding them new homes, but what can you do to contribute to the cause? Have you ever considered car donation? There are several ways you can help animal rescue efforts by donating your used car.
Why You Should Donate To Animal Shelters
As disturbing as it is, a lot of people are very short sighted. And when this short sighted nature comes to acquiring a pet, it tends to take on a very short and clearly defined course. First, the owner to be sees a cute little puppy, or give in to their kids' request for a kitten with promises to take care of it. Over time, the responsibilities of having a pet (and there are many) begin to overpower the initial cuteness. And often, the pet stops being quite so cute after it has shredded a few pairs of shoes, or relieved itself in an inappropriate place.
Once the infatuation stage of the relationship is over with, many of these short sighted pet owners just dump their pets wherever it is convenient. Much worse, as the pets reach maturity, they begin to reproduce more stray animals. As these strays are taken in by animal control, the problem of overcrowding in the kennels becomes an issue. And that is where animal rescue car donation becomes such a boon to these pets. When a kennel is getting to the critical mass stage of overcrowding, it has a choice to make - does it expand to accommodate more animals, does it put down a few animals to free up the space it already has, or does it hold an event to adopt these animals to loving homes with people who will care for them for life? There is a third option to help support animals - and that is car donation to support animal rescue organizations.
Donating Your Vehicle To Animal Rescue Organizations
Check with your local animal rescue organizations - some of them actually have vehicle donation programs where you hand over the keys to your old clunker and they either auction your car for sale or scrap it for usable parts that can be resold. Funds from your charitable car contribution are then used to provide low-cost pet spaying or neutering, preventing stray animals from reproducing more offspring that will not be properly taken care of, or the funds will provide food and housing for pets until they can be adopted.
Other Ways To Donate To Animal Shelters
If per chance, your community's animal rescue shelter does not have the means to take in automobile donations, there are still ways that you can donate your used car to make a charitable contribution with the help of a vehicle removal and recycling service such as Buy My Wreck. The Buy My Wreck car donation process is simple - they will pick up your automobile for free, act as the middleman in selling your vehicle, and then give you cash for the car. After receiving the cash, you are free to donate the proceeds to the animal shelter of your choice. Not only will your charitable contribution help save homeless pets and support animal rescue, but you can also receive a tax write-off for donation.

How to Turn Your Old Beat-Up Car Into a Car Donation Tax Deduction

If you're thinking about donating a car to a charity you may want to keep the following tips in mind. A car donation tax deduction can benefit not only you and the charity but a person in need also.
Charities have the option of using donated vehicles for their own use, for providing transportation for volunteers or for charity-related activities such as picking up supplies etc. But more often they will already have enough vehicles and they will sell the auto, truck, RV, airplane or other vehicle from their car lot or through dealers to raise funds for their charity. If the charity uses a dealer they've contracted with, the charity may only receive $50 or less from the dealer when the vehicle is sold.
Changes in the laws limit the amount the donor can receive for a used car donation to the actual price that the charity sells the car or truck for.
If the charity or car donation program is not familiar to you, you may want to make sure the charity is eligible from the IRS to receive tax deductible contributions. Request a copy of the charity's letter of determination from the IRS. This letter verifies the charity's tax exempt status.
Make sure that the charity or car donation center gives you an itemized detailed receipt for your car donation. Keep it in a safe place and file it with your tax return. Non-cash donations can be an unwanted red flag for an IRS audit so make sure you document the value of the car and keep good detailed records.
If you discover that your old used car is worth more than $500 then you as the donor must fill out Section A of the IRS Form 8283 and file it with your income tax return. Make sure you get a written acknowledgement along with the receipt from the charity because you'll be required to do so.
If the charity turns around and sells the car instead of using it for transportation then the charity must give the donor certification that the car was sold at what is called "arms length" between parties who are unrelated. And after the sale report the sale price of the car to you within at least 30 days. The donor's car donation tax deduction will be only for the amount that the charity sold your car for. And if the charity doesn't sell the car and elects to keep it, then it must give you, the donor, a written receipt for the vehicle within 30 days of the date of the sale.
The charitable car donation organization might also be required to provide certification to the donor showing how it plans to make use of or improve or repair the car or other vehicle and also that it promises it won't sell or transfer the car to another person or company.
In the US, the federal government imposes penalties on charities that provide fraudulent acknowledgments or documentation to donors.
If the car, truck or vehicle you plan to donate is worth $5,000 or more, then an independent appraisal is required and you must fill out Section B of IRS Form 8283. You ma have to get advice from your CPA or accountant on how to handle this.
If you think or know your car or truck or other vehicle is worth less than $5,000, you can use the Kelley Blue Book or a little guide book from the National Auto Dealers Association (NADA) to figure out the market value. You can find these guides online or at your local public library. You must use the correct figures for the mileage, date and exact condition of your car - document this as much as possible. Choosing the highest figure listed in the guide for your car model and year without taking into consideration any of the other options and factors will not make the IRS very happy.
Take several current pictures of the car or truck and save all your vehicle receipts for new tires, repair work, or any necessary upgrades to help prove its value.
It's important to remember, that you as the donor, not the charitable organization, are responsible for determining the value the car. It is you who will pay any penalties if the IRS challenges your figures through an audit.
There are many reputable lesser-known as well as the more well-known charities such as Target, Purple Heart, Kidney Foundation, Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries. Centers are located in every state including Massachusetts, California, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Connecticut etc. Some of the charities in some states seem more active in pursuing the donations than others and you'll find more ads.
These are just a few of the best tips you should know about if you plan on donating a car, truck, RV, airplane, boat or other vehicle. Armed with these facts you can start to make an educated decision about whether you want to go ahead and donate a vehicle and get a nice car donation tax deduction.

Car Donation Tax Write Off

So the deduction for donating a car is based on the Fair Market Value (FMV) of your car. They are many ways you can get that value for your car. The most common way would probably involve you going to the internet, and there is a number of websites out there that allow you to enter your vehicles information. Information like the type of vehicle, the year, the model and then they calculate the fair market value.
The IRS has a list of organizations that are qualified as donors, these are the only organizations you can donate to and guarantee a deduction from the IRS. However there is an exception to the rule, churches, temples, mosques and governments do not have to be on that list for them to qualify as places you can donate to. Most of the time, you are most likely going to be donating a vehicle to some kind of church, so you do not have to worry yourself with the list.
In order to get the benefit of the vehicle you have to itemize on your tax return instead of doing the standard deduction. So make sure you are doing that, otherwise it is not going to be worth doing a donation, you will be better off selling your car. You need to be honest about the Fair Market Value of your vehicle because the IRS will look for supporting documentation, including how you came up with the value.
You also have to document your donation. Get a receipt from the place you are donating to and on that receipt you should have the date, amount, address and your phone number. If you do not have that information the IRS has every right to disregard the claim. The IRS publication 4302 provides in detail further rules and guidelines.

Car Donations and Charitable Donations

The modern society, with its distinct wealth-based classes has always prided itself with a strong inclination to charity. From fundraising events to church donations, charity has become a way for helping others but also a way to get rid of some taxes. The tax benefit one gets from donating for charity is roughly proportional to the value of the donation of course. Lately, a new "charity trend" has formed, especially in the United States and Western/Central Europe, that of the car donation.
Car donations are practically give-aways of no longer wanted or heavily used cars, to charity organizations, individuals, companies or even institutions. In the United States, the tax benefit from such car donations is among the highest you can get from donations; hence the practice of giving away your old car when you buy a new one has become very popular. Usually, the charity organization you will donate your car too will evaluate it and set an estimative value for it, which will determine this tax reduction. For values that are under $500, the value of this reduction is set by the donor's own estimate of the car's value. Deductions for donations over this amount are usually limited by the selling price of the vehicle. The vehicles are either sold in auctions or through direct marketing.
Although the car donation program is a solid one in theory, it has been speculated that it could soon become a "tax shelter". Since this could not be proven so far, car donations have steadily grown to a number of almost 1 million per year. This means that almost 1 million tax payers have reduced their taxes with sums of up to $600-$700 million each year, only through this type of car donation.
From a charity organization's point of view, the car donation program is one of the best fields to work with. Actually, it has come to a point where such non-profit organizations actually rely on car donations to keep their charity events possible. Some of them have their own car lots for donated cars and process them directly, while others rely on ads, auto auction companies and so forth. What most charity organization will do is take the donated car, sell it through the auction company and then distribute the money to local charity organizations, or further donates the money to a charity that the donor of the car indicated.
It is important to understand that the charity organizations selling donated cars don't get a profit from it, they only take a small quota of the sum to cover up their expenses. A trustworthy car donation charity organization will bring other charities and institutions a lot of money each year, genuinely helping them out. This said, it is expected that the car donation phenomenon will constantly rise with each year, if the same tax reduction laws are applied further on. Given the fact that it's one of the most solid and popular types of donations today, it's very unlikely that these reductions will be hindered by government in any way.

How to Avoid IRS Rules and Regulations Violations When Donating a Car to Charity

When donating a vehicle to charity there are certain IRS rules and regulations that must be followed.
First, for vehicle deductions of more than $500 you are required to attach the charity's acknowledgment of receipt to your return for the year of the donation, even if the vehicle is not sold by the charity during that same year. The charity must provide you with that written acknowledgement within 30 days after the vehicle donation. If you receive the charity's written acknowledgment after filing your tax return for that year, you may file an amended return and claim the deduction on the amended return. In that instance you must attach the acknowledgment to the amended return.
Second, the charity's written acknowledgement form must contain the amount of the gross sales proceeds. It is generally this figure that will be used when determining your deduction amount. Please note however that if the charity significantly uses or materially improves the vehicles, they must certify both the vehicles intended use and duration of that use. If the charity does in fact significantly use or materially improve the vehicle, then you may deduct the vehicle's market value as opposed to the gross sales proceeds amount. If you have any questions about this a quick call to the IRS can help.
As a matter of fact, when attempting to calculate the vehicle's market value you should consult IRS publications 526 - Charitable Deductions and Publication 561, "Determining the Value of Donated Property." Remember that when the IRS is considering a vehicle's fair market value it takes into account more than just the book value of the car. It considers other factors, including the vehicle's condition, which could actually lower the book value of the vehicle.
Third, in order to claim a vehicle donation you must itemize your deductions. The decision to itemize your deductions is usually determined by whether your total itemized deductions are greater than the standard deduction afforded to you for that tax year. Your tax preparer can assist you with determining this. If you prepare your own taxes using tax return software, most software programs have guidelines you can consult.
Fourth, make sure that the organization you are dealing with is a legitimate 501 (c) 3 by calling the IRS customer service hotline at 1-877-829-5500 and requesting Publication 78. Publication 78 is an annual government publication that identifies organizations qualified to receive deductible contributions. Changes made between publications can be found online at
http://www.irs.gov/charities, where this is also a list of eligible organizations not listed in Publication 78 and those organizations that have had their tax deduction status revoked. If you don't have time to wait for Publication 78 to arrive in the mail, the folks at customer service can check an organization's status for you over the phone.
In conclusion, though often complicated, IRS rules and regulations regarding charitable vehicle donations are available for the asking. Remember, the only stupid question is the question you fail to ask. When contemplating a vehicle donation program, be sure to protect yourself from future tax audits and potential scams by asking a lot of questions up front and doing your homework.

Before Donating A Vehicle, Consider Cash For Cars Programs

For people who find themselves with a vehicle that they simply cannot get rid of, most of the time they donate that car or truck to a local service that will tow the vehicle away and deal with the disposal. This is a perfectly acceptable option, but there are actually some better options out there that you can use. These are generally referred to as cash for cars programs, and they have been running online for a long time now. Finding the right company is going to be the most important step, and that search will begin online.
Finding The Company
You need to start your search for the right company online, as this is where the majority of the best providers do their business. This allows them to reach a large audience all across the country. Because they have put in place a system that allows them to remove a vehicle in any state in the country, you don't have to search high and low to find a company that services your area.
If you do a search online, you will find many providers that will service your area, and after you've found the right company, you can begin to look at some reviews. The main purpose for looking at reviews online is to make sure that the company you are considering is paying a fair amount for their vehicles. This is usually the most important thing when people are using a service like this, so they are generally pretty vocal if they didn't get as much money as they had expected.
Getting The Deal Done
After you have made the decision to go with a certain company to remove your vehicle, it is time to start the process. Most of the larger companies will have forms on their website that you can fill out to get the process started. This makes it easy on everybody, as well as speed up the transaction considerably. Once you have given them the information they need about the car, they will make you a cash offer which you can accept or reject. In the event that you accept the offer, they will start the process right away, and you will be that much closer to getting that vehicle out of your life forever.
The next step is to get the vehicle towed away, and this is rather simple as well. Usually the company handling the removal will get in contact with a local tow company, and they will arrange a time to come get the vehicle. This can be done in a very short period of time, but they will make sure that it is convenient for you before moving forward. When the tow truck comes, some companies will have them pay you your money right there when they pick up the car. Some programs will have a check mailed to your house in a few days, but either way you get your money fast.
While donating a car might be a good idea for some, there is no reason to settle for this option when there are so many companies that are willing to pay money for cars and trucks on the internet. You can visit our site for more information about the process, and learn how to prepare yourself for what is to come.

The 3 Requirements For Getting a Tax Deduction When You Donate a Car

If you've donated a car, you may qualify for an IRS deduction. There are three simple requirements that must be met to qualify for a tax deduction:
1) Deductions for donating a car must be itemized in your tax return. Use Schedule A of your 1040 tax form for your deductions and be sure to include information about the donated car. Remember that your deductions cannot be more than half of your adjusted gross income.
2) The charity that you've donated your car to must be eligible to receive your cash or non-cash donations. The best thing to do is visit the IRS website for the online version of Publication 78 -- "The Cumulative List of Organizations". You will find a comprehensive list of IRS recognized 501c3 organizations there.
It's highly recommended that you check the 501c3 status of the charity before you donate a car. Don't just assume that a charity is qualified just because they've said so. You can also call the IRS Division for Tax Exempt and Government Entities.
Anyone has the right to request documentation from the charity. You can request the charity provide you with a copy of their application for tax-exempt status, their determination letter and their most recent annual returns. While the charity can't charge you for this information, take note that they do have the right to charge money for making copies and any postage or shipping fees.
3) A car cannot be owned with the primary purpose of profiting from it. This means that car dealerships cannot get a tax deduction from donating a car to charity.
Planning on donating your car just for the tax deduction? Know the new rules!
The rules have changed with it comes to tax deductions for donating a car. Prior to 2005, you could donate a car to charity and claim the fair market value -- the actual sales price -- of the donated car as your tax deduction.
Now, whenever you donate your car, you'll be able to deduct no more than the amount that the donated car earned at the charity's auction, or $500, whichever amount is less. The standard amount that a donated car pulls in at auction is between $200 and $500. So, even if your donated car pulls in $600 at auction, your deduction can be no more than $500.
There are only two ways that you can still qualify for an IRS deduction based on the fair market value of the car donated.
The charity that you've donated your car to must prepare a statement that they intend to use the donated car for a specific purpose that is thoroughly explained. The charity can also state that they intend to give the donated car to an individual in need. The charity has the right to sell the donated car to a needy individual but the sales price must be well below market value.
The charity can also present you with a statement of their intent to make significant improvements to your donated used car. The explanation as to what these improvements are should be detailed and precise. There should also be a promise from the charity that they will not sell your donated vehicle until these improvements are completed.
Such statements or letters must also include your name, taxpayer ID, the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and the date that you donated your car. The charity also has permission to use Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes, in lieu of the statement or letter.
The charity will also provide you with an acknowledgment of your donation, typically as Form 8283 -- Non-cash Charitable Contributions. The charity should have this acknowledgement to you within thirty days of your car donation and it's advisable to attach Form 8283 to your tax return.

Car Donation Tax Deduction Calculator

There are many sites out there on the web that can give you a car donation tax estimation. If you're considering donating your vehicle to a charity for tax deduction purposes, you might want to do some research to determine if it will work best in your favor to donate it or if it might be better to just sell or trade the vehicle.
The charity you want to donate the vehicle to has to comply with certain requirements from the IRS, if you want to claim more than $500 as a donation. You will need a statement from the charity stating that you received nothing in exchange for the donated vehicle. This has to be an official document from the Charity. Other information needed on the document is your full name and tax id., your Social Security number or EIN number, and also include the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and the date you donated the vehicle. If you plan on claiming just $500 for the donated vehicle, the official documents are not necessary. The charity should furnish you the form #8283 if your vehicle is worth more than $500 and you have to attach a copy to your tax return.
You can get a deduction for your Car Donation at fair market value if you get a statement from the charity stating that they will be using the vehicle themselves, for the business, or they have some disabled or other needy person that is going to be using the vehicle. If your vehicle is worth more than $500, you should use one of the Tax deduction calculators available to determine how much you can actually claim on your tax return.

Looking For The Best Charity Car Donation Program?

You might have an old car or vehicle, which you don't use very often, just sitting on your property or on the street. A car donation that is made to a most charities greatly benefits both the charity and the car donor. To answer a common question, in most cases a donated car or vehicle doesn't have to run but it should be towable. And your vehicle must have all four tires inflated for them to accept it.
If the charity you're considering doesn't appear to welcome your questions and doesn't provide good answers about where the proceeds from donations will go then you may want to think about making your car donation to a different charity.
You want to locate your title to the car before you call in your donation. Once you have the forms from the charity just fill them out and have them handy for the driver when he comes to tow the car or vehicle. In the new tax law, regarding the fair market value section, there are some exceptions, for example, you can base your deduction on the fair market value of the car or vehicle if the charity sells it to someone in need at a discounted price or if the charity uses the car as part of its charitable plan instead of selling it.
And if you itemize your income tax return then a vehicle donation is allowed. Also, if your car is running, think about dropping it off yourself with the charity to save them from paying for towing costs.
Cars are usually donated to the needy recipients directly or they are sold and the money is given away as part of the charities function. Vehicles that are not being used make very good donations, allowing people in great need to have a dependable means of transportation. In wear and tear, minor repairs and breakdowns, a vehicle owner could spend at least $3000 a year.
There are similar charitable donation laws in all other countries. Charities will usually provide you with a release of liability when they pick up your vehicle or you take it in, and after the car is sold, they provide you with a tax-deduction form that explains exactly much they received for it. Vehicles that need repair can be accepted provided the vehicle is fixable for less than what it would sell for.
One of the good exceptions to the new IRS tax regulations allows donors to still deduct the fair market value of their vehicle, provided the charity does improve the vehicle materially. The "blue book" guides are used to show the average resale prices based on the model and year of your car or vehicle. The charitable organization uses any profit they receive from your vehicle to help fund their specific causes.
Regardless of the tax laws, it's a good idea to protect yourself by having good insurance coverage on your vehicle right up until it is donated. Donating will eliminate the need of paying for advertising for you vehicle, there's no loss of privacy and possible security risk from potential buyers who answer your ads and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance, and minor or major repairs to keep your car in running condition while you look for a buyer. Some charities that run their own donation program instead of hiring a car donation program broker or middleman are discriminating about which vehicles they will accept, repair and materially improve. They generally sell most of the vehicles at retail prices.
For the states that require getting smog or safety inspection certificates, you can donate your vehicle without any of these documents. In some cases charitable car donors can still claim the fair market value for their vehicle. Typically the vehicle is marketed by the charity and sold to a buyer in who is in need of a good used vehicle.
In the past you could deduct the fair market value of the car at the time of the deduction - but not any more. Charities look at car donations from both the point of view of the donor of the car, and themselves as the charity receiving it.
Picking the best charity for your car donation can be very overwhelming and you want to make sure your choice is the best choice for you. Major charity car donation programs include: the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart Car Donation Program and the Jewish Car Donation Program. So go ahead and donate your car, truck, boat, RV, motorcycle or even your aircraft today and enjoy a nice vehicle donation tax deduction on your next income tax return.
